Student FERPA Permissions

What is FERPA?

As a student, you are afforded certain rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). The act provides students the right to inspect and review educational records, the right to seek to amend those records, and to limit disclosure of information from those records to a third party. How to grant FERPA permissions to a parent or guardian:

  1. Log into the ECU Parent & Family Portal.
  2. Click on “Faculty, staff, or student? Log in here” and use single sign on with your ECU email and passphrase.
  3. Click “Add my first connection.”
  4. Enter your parent or guardian’s email address and use the drop-down menu to select their relationship to you. Then click “Continue.”
  5. Select the records you would like to share with your parent or guardian. You can choose to share all available records by clicking “Select all” or individually select the records.
  6. Once you have chosen which records to share, click “Grant Access.”
  7. You’ll see a green banner at the top of the page if your connection request was successfully sent. Your parent or guardian will receive an email detailing the information you submitted. Once they conform your connection, you’ll receive an email.
  8. You may repeat the process if you have multiple parents, guardians, or family members you would like to grant access to.

**Your FERPA permissions/connection request will expire after one year (365 days). After a year, you will receive an email notification to create a new connection. You may change or cancel your request at any point prior to the one-year expiration.

How to grant or deny requests to your parent or guardian who submits a connection request first:

  1. If your parent or guardian has requested a connection with you and requested access to your FERPA information on the ECU Parent and Family Portal, you will receive an email to your ECU email.
  2. To respond, click on the button “Click here to approve this request” in the email.
  3. Log into ECU Parent and Family Portal by clicking “Faculty, staff, or student? Log in here” and use single sign on with your ECU email and passphrase.
  4. Click on the connection request from your parent or guardian.
  5. Select the records you would like to share with your parent or guardian. You can choose to share all available records by clicking “Select all” or individually select the records.
  6. Once you have chosen which records to share, click “Grant Access.”
  7. If the update to your connection was successful, you’ll be taken back to the Connections screen and see a green banner at the top confirming that the connection has been updated.
  8. You may repeat the process if you have multiple parents, guardians, or family members who have submitted a connection request.
