Student Education Planner User Guide for Advisors

The Degree Works Student Educational Planner (SEP) is an advising tool that students and advisors can use to map out a clear pathway for timely degree completion. Advising plans created in SEP will show students the required courses within their program(s) and a recommended timeline of when they should be completed.

Only create a plan for future terms.  You do not need to add courses that a student has already completed.  Only add courses that a student still needs to take.

Major Descriptions and Plans

Best Practices

  • Communication: Degree Works should be used as the primary means of communicating and documenting a student’s plan of study.
  • Curriculum: All concentrations, minors, certificates, etc. should be entered in Banner in a timely manner to ensure accurate plans. For example, if a concentration is missing the audit and the plan cannot accurately reflect what a student still needs to take.
  • Petitions: Advisors are to submit Petitions for course substitutions/exceptions for the Degree Works audit in a timely manner to ensure that the most accurate and up to date Degree Works worksheet and planned audit are displayed.  Courses that require a substitution will show as still needed on the plan if the petition has not been processed.

Plan Types

There are two different options for creating a plan, Blank Plans and Templates.

  1. Blank Plans allow you to build a customized plan from scratch.

  2. Templates allow you to select a pre‐defined template with courses and semesters already added. Note: you can still edit a plan if selected from a Template.
